FAQs on Parasites and Our Feline Friends

How can my cat contract intestinal parasites?
While it is most common that cats contract parasites hunting outdoors, they can also be transmitted through flea exposure and household rodents.

Can my cat get Heartworm?
Although it is low risk in Manitoba for cats, there is still potential that your cat could contract the Heartworm parasite. Cats are not ideal hosts for Heartworm but if mosquito exposure is high, transmission can occur.

Should I be worried about exposure to ticks?
Yes, if your cat is outdoors there is a risk of exposure to ticks. Although cats groom themselves, ticks can still attach. Tick prevention is recommended for cats that are regularly outdoors. This includes cats that are supervised in the backyard or freely roam.
